[edit] "Taiwanese Minnan is no longer the native language (or mother tongue) of the majority of Taiwanese."

When did this happen? All the sources I can find say 70% of Taiwanese speak Taiwanese, and since they didn't learn it in school, where did they learn it? Readin (talk) 15:30, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

The fact that these people speak Minnan doesn't mean it is their mother tongue or native language. Minnan is a common language in Taiwan so people who didn't learn the language as a mother tongue would just pick it up.
However, most people under 40 can speak Mandarin more fluently than Minnan. That affects their children who would just pick up Mandarin as their mother tongue. Minnan remains the most widely spoken vernacular in Taiwan, but it is incorrect to say majority of Taiwanese (ie, 50%+) speak Minnan as their native language. For example, all the young Hoklos I know (under 25), can hardly speak proper Minnan. They speak with a funny accent and they normally cannot speak in complete sentences without using Mandarin.
The perception you have about Minnan is outdated. It may be the case 20-30 years ago, but it is no longer the case.--pyl (talk) 03:22, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
