SpinVox is a global speech technology company, headquartered in Marlow, UK and New York, NY. It provides voice-to-text conversion services via its patented Voice Message Conversion System (VMCS ). The company delivers services for carrier markets, including wireless, fixed, VoIP and cable, as well as for unified communications, enterprise and Web 2.0 environments.
The Voice Message Conversion System (VMCS) works by combining speech technologies with live learning capabilities and human intelligence. It is developed by the SpinVox Advanced Speech Group based in Cambridge, UK, led by Cambridge academic entrepreneur Dr. Tony Robinson and includes Cambridge University Professor Phil Woodland.
The company was founded in 2003 by Christina Domecq and Daniel Doulton. Privately held, it has raised more than $200 million (US) in funding from institutions such as Goldman Sachs, ABN Amro, Gartmore, and Allen & Co, and private equity investors such as Martin Hughes of Toscafund, Charles Dunstone of Carphone Warehouse and Peter Wood, the founder of Direct Line, eSure and Sheila’s Wheels.
SpinVox voice-to-text conversion services include voicemail-to-text, speak-a-text, blog posts, social network updates, blast and memo messages.
SpinVox has launched voicemail-to-text and speak-a-text services with carrier networks including: Telstra (Australia), Vodafone Spain; Rogers (Canada); Telus (Canada); SaskTel (Canada); Cincinnati Bell (USA); Alltel Wireless (now Verizon, USA); Movistar (Chile) ; Vodacom (South Africa) and Skype.
The company has announced enterprise and unified communications solution agreements with organizations including: Avaya; eServe Global; ViCorp; Encoded; Centrica (British Gas); EMAP Radio; PHS; National House Building Council (NHBC), and Boots Group. It is a member of the Microsoft Windows Developer Advisory Council (DAC) The company has also announced Internet and media partnerships with organizations including: LiveJournal; News International; WNYC Radio; EMI Records;Polydor Records and MTV.
In 2008 the company hired speech industry veterans Richard Cohen, who was responsible for designing the first voice mail applications deployed on public telephone networks in North America and Japan, and David Thomson, the former CTO for Lucent Speech Solutions who developed the speech technology behind systems, such as 444-FILM, that have handled over 10 billion calls.
In December 2008, SpinVox enhanced the messaging experience by adding a simple and innovative service, Voxlinks. Voxlinks are clickable links at the end of the message which gives the user a quick one click access to listen to the voice message or to speak a reply back to the caller.
In February 2009, SpinVox announced it will encourage access to its speech platform through an open API to enable any developer to create speech-to-text based Web or mobile applications. More information on the API is available at http://create.spinvox.com/
In February 2009 the company also launched conversion services for Italian and Portuguese languages, adding to currently supported languages: English; French; Spanish and German.
