Mid front unrounded vowel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) distinguishes two mid front unrounded vowels:
- The close-mid front unrounded vowel [e]
- The open-mid front unrounded vowel [ɛ]
Some linguistics (especially Sinologists) use [E], an unofficial IPA symbol, as the "exact" mid front unrounded vowel between [e] and [ɛ] (that is, [E] = [e̞] = [ɛ̝]). See also Obsolete and nonstandard symbols in the International Phonetic Alphabet.
