The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) distinguishes two mid front unrounded vowels:

Some linguistics (especially Sinologists) use [E], an unofficial IPA symbol, as the "exact" mid front unrounded vowel between [e] and [ɛ] (that is, [E] = [] = [ɛ̝]). See also Obsolete and nonstandard symbols in the International Phonetic Alphabet.
