[edit] History

The Club celebrated its centenary in 1994 having been formed by a group of local businessmen and former college students taking its name from the hotel on the River Mersey sea front at Waterloo, seven miles to the north of Liverpool where the founders met. They moved to their present ground The Arriva Stadium (formerly known as Rossett Park) in 1903.

Marine quickly made an impression on local football, winning numerous titles in the Zingari League and the Liverpool Combination. Their greatest success as an amateur team in this period culminated in an F.A. Amateur Cup Final appearance in 1931/32, when they lost 7-1 to Dulwich Hamlet in front of a 22,000 crowd at West Ham United. In 1946 they went close again by reaching the semi-final.

In 1935/36 they moved to the all-professional Lancashire Combination and enjoyed limited success before moving to the Cheshire County League in 1969/70. In 1972 Roly Howard was appointed first team manager and completed 1,975 competitive games over a 33 year period before retiring at the end of the 2004/05 season. He was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving manager in world football as Marine enjoyed its most successful period winning some 30 trophies.

The Club relinquished its amateur status and became professional in 1974. Three Cheshire League Championships were won in five seasons before progressing to the Northern Premier League in 1979/80. They have twice been Champions (1993/94 and 1994/95) as well as twice being runners-up and have won the League Cup on three occasions (1984/85, 1991/92, and 2002/03).

The best performance in the F.A. Cup was reaching the 3rd Round in 1992/3 when they lost 3-1 to Crewe Alexandra. Marine have also achieved ten first and two second round appearances in the FA Cup and have beaten two Football League Clubs (Barnsley and Halifax Town) in the competition. Marine have twice reached the semi-finals of the F.A. Trophy in 1983/84 and 1991/92 and have been winners of 13 senior county cups.

Under the management team of Alvin McDonald and his assistant, Peter Carroll, Marine begun to challenge for honours again. In the first two years of Macdonalds management, the Mariners qualified for the UniBond Premier play-offs only to lose to the eventual winners on both occasions. In the season 07/08, Marine finished seventh and won the Liverpool Senior Cup.

In 08/09, Marine started brilliantly, looking to be strong challengers for promotion come the end of the season. However, this run came to an end around December, and eventually led to the departure of several players and, ultimately, their manager Alvin McDonald. Kevin Lynch, club captain, and Phil Brazier, both players at Marine, were given the job of joint caretaker managers. After the end of the season, Lynch was appointed as permanent manager with Brazier as his assistant. Marine finished the 08/09 season in 13th place.

[edit] Stadium

The club plays at Rossett Park, which is located on College Road in Crosby. Marine have played at Rosset Park since 1904, when they relocated from its previous ground at Waterloo Park, Crosby. Its current capacity is 2,800, of which 400 are seated, but in 1949, Marine played host to Nigeria at Rosset Park, and the crowd on that day was over 4,000. Everton Ladies also play there. Inside the stadium there is a bar named the 'Scouse House' and there is a club shop ran by the Marine Supporters Association (MSA)

In 2006 the ground was renamed "The Arriva Stadium" after a sponsorship deal with public transport company Arriva.

[edit] Marine Football Club Television (MAFCTV)

On Saturday 10 January, Marine FC announced MAFCTV, the clubs official TV channel, on their official website. MAFCTV will show live scores during each of the club matches, and will include the match console, which will show team sheets, stats and figures, and match reports for each league game. The league table section shows up-to-date stats and figures about the league, and the Premier League table. There are also two video sections - Highlights and Interviews which are to be utilised in the future. MAFCTV is part of Unibond TV, which was launched alongside the updated Unibond Premier League website in February.

[edit] Management Team

Alvin McDonald was assistant manager at Burscough before becoming manager of Bromborough Pool. After a successful three years he took over at Poulton Victoria where he won seven trophies in six seasons which included winning the Carlsberg Cup at Wembley. In 1998 Alvin was appointed manager at Vauxhall Motors bringing in Peter Carroll as his assistant. The pairing had a successful period which saw Vauxhalls move up the leagues and into the Northern Premier League. They also knocked QPR out of the FA Cup. Two short managerial stints followed at Northwich Victoria and Runcorn FC Halton during the 2004/05 season before joining Marine.

Alvin left the club on Monday 6 April 2009 following 16 defeats in 19 games, leaving Marine in 13th place, even though they were challenging for the top spot before Christmas. Phil Brazier and Kevin Lynch took over as caretaker managers, with Peter Cumiskey as caretaker assistant manager. Then, on April 27, the club announced that club captain Lynch would be taking the managers job permanently, with Phil Brazier as his assistant.

Paul Leary, Marine's chairman, said "This is a new era for Marine Football Club and I look forward to working with him [Kevin Lynch] to make some real progress over the coming years. This will be a popular decision for our fans and I know that both Kevin and Phil will do everything they can to bring success to our Football Club." Lynch had already expressed an interest in taking the job on a permanent basis, when he told the Crosby Herald on the 9th April that he would love to take the job.

[edit] Season Summaries

[edit] 2008/09

Marine started well, A 6-2 home win on the opening day of the season left them top of the table after the first game. Marine remained unbeaten for the rest of August, hoping to keep them in contention for a play off place. This good form dropped as the club only won one league game, losing 3 and drawing 1, leaving them 6th, as well as being knocked out of the FA Cup in a 5-1 defeat at home to worksop. The end of October saw Marine sitting second in the table. They were knocked out of the FA Trohy in the 2nd qual. round, at home to Durham City. Marine lost their captain Lee Parle to a horrific broken leg at home to Ashton United during the second minute, leaving the game suspended for 40 minutes whilst he was treated November saw Marine win 2 league games, draw one, and lose one. The defeat of Guiseley was a high point for many, ultimately being one of the best performances of the season. During December a win at FC United would have ultimately seen Marine go top of the league, however a three-two defeat left them 4th. The match was overshadowed by John Lawless allegedly making an aeroplane gesture towards the FC fans, mocking the Munich disaster. Later findings showed that Lawless was a member of a facebook group regarding this incident also. Lawless later left the club, although the FA investigation showed no wrong had been done that was punishable. Marine lost on boxing day to Prescot, 6-3. They went on a horrific run and had fell to 10th by the end of February. Marine gained only 3 points from 8 league games (24 points)in March, leaving them 12th, and many worrying over relegation. Darren Brookfield expressed his desire to leave, as did Steve Hussey in early April. McDonald was sacked as manager after a four nil defeat to Matlock Town, and Kevin Lynch and Phil Brazier took over the roles of caretaker managers. Losing 2-3, 0-1, 0-4, 0-5, and finally winning 1-0 on the final day. Lynch secrued the managers job for the next season.
