[edit] Family

Maria's paternal grandparents were Henry II, Duke of Brabant and his wife Marie of Hohenstaufen. Her maternal grandparents were Hugh IV, Duke of Burgundy and his first wife Yolanda of Dreux.

Maria's siblings included Henry IV, Duke of Brabant and John I, Duke of Brabant. Maria neice was Margaret of Brabant, mother of John of Bohemia, Beatrice, Queen of Hungary and one of Maria's successors, Maria, Queen of France.

[edit] Marriage

Maria married on 24th June 1275, to Philip III of France. This was Philip's second marriage, after the death of his first wife, Isabella of Aragon. Isabella had already given birth to three surviving sons: Louis, Philip and Charles.

Philip was under the strong influence of his mother, the dowager Queen of France, Marguerite of Provence and his minion, surgeon and chamberlain (Chambellan) Pierre de La Brosse (La La Broce or Brou). Maria stood out at the French court, not being French herself.

In 1276, Philip's son and heir, Louis died, under suspicious circumstances. Maria was suspected of ordering the poisoning of Louis, La Brosse was also suspected. La Brosse was imprisoned and later executed for the murder. Marguerite suspected Maria of ordering the death of Louis and Philip did seem to agree more with his mother than his wife.

Philip III died in 1285, Maria lost her political influence so dedicated her life to her three children. Maria stepson, Philip became King of France and was crowned King 6 January 1286 in Reims. Maria lived right through Philip IV's reign and she had outlived all three children.

[edit] Children

Maria and Philip had three children:

  1. Louis (May 1276 – May 19, 1319), Count of Évreux
  2. Blanche (1278 – March 19, 1305, Vienna), married Rudolf III of Austria on May 25, 1300
  3. Marguerite (1282 – February 14, 1317), married Edward I of England

[edit] Death

Maria died in 1321, aged sixty one, in the monastery of Meulan where she had withdrawn to in 1316. Maria wasn't buried in Basilica of Saint-Denis, where most other members of the French royal family were buried, instead she was buried in the Cordeliers Convent, in Paris. The church was destroyed in a fire in 1580.
