Territorial autonomy is a defined part of the state's territory that is authorized to govern itself, manage certain matters handed over to its competence. Typically authorized for an internal cultural identity (by ethnic, religious, linguistic, geographical exclusivity) and its social and economic regulations (legislative, administrative and political structures of self-government).

Cabinda. - 2. Subnational condominiums like Brčko District are not counted.
- 3. Subnational monarchies are not included, like Barotseland Kingdom, Seborga and List of subnational monarchs.
- 4. In the Union of the Comoros federal units (Anjouan,Grand Comore and Moheli) are called autonomous islands.
- 5. In the Kingdom of Belgium parallelly with federal units (Flemish Region,Walloon Region and Brussels-Capital Region) there are cultural linguistic autonomous communities.
- 6. Subregional autonomous territories are not included, like Alto Adige/Südtirol, German-speaking Community of Belgium, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Rabi Island, Rotuma, Torres Strait Islands, Trentino,... .
- 7. For clarity local autonomies (local territorial autonomies) are Barbuda, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Nenets Autonomous Okrug,Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Vojvodina,... .
