Lioness

A lioness is a female member of the species Panthera leo. Lionesses are the core members of, and the primary hunters for each pride or primary social group of lions.

When not applied to the animals in general, the term also may refer to

specific lionesses:

• Bast, ancient Egyptian sun and war deity depicted as a lioness
• Elsa the lioness, a lioness raised in Kenya, whose life was documented in print and film
• Lion Gate of Mycenae, lionesses adorning a gateway built to a second millennium B.C. Mycenae citadel located at a site whose name is thought to predate Ancient Greek civilization
• Lioness of Gobedra, a relief carving of a lioness near Axum, Ethiopia
